Training for Teachers

motive8 delivered the first of its new ‘Training for Teachers’ programme with a primary schools gymnastics training workshop held at Ashley Primary School in Walton on Thames, Surrey.

The motive8 Training for Teachers programme was introduced following requests from primary schools to extend professional development for teachers. The aim of the workshops is to increase the understanding and confidence of teachers in their delivery of physical education and sport to young people.

It is hoped that the quality of teaching and learning will be improved, helping young people to develop in line with national curriculum guidelines. This in turn supports the government’s national strategy for physical education and sport strategy for young people (PESSYP), which aims to provide access to five hours of high quality physical activity every week.

This first unit was created by motive8’s Education Consultant, Gary Palmer, who delivered an inset to all of the classroom teachers at Ashley Primary School. This session focused on the objectives below, specifically linked to gymnastics.

What the national curriculum core tasks are and how these can influence what is delivered to young people How to incorporate and use equipment safely, providing challenging and exciting lessons for young people How to ensure sessions give young people the opportunity to compose, perform and evaluate

The motive8 Training for Teachers programme contains core activity areas of gymnastics, games and athletics with new modules to be added in the future as the programme develops. A robust evaluation process enables motive8 to monitor and build upon each unit that it delivers, improving the quality of teaching and learning for every young person in the school.
