motive8 Schools Tennis Programme

Local Middlesex primary schools

motive8 launched its new grass-roots tennis programme for local Middlesex primary schools in 2010.

The after-school tennis club at Collis School in Teddington was run as a live ‘pilot’ during the Spring Term 2010, with a plan to expand delivery of the coaching programme to a further four schools in the summer term.

The after-school tennis club initially ran once a week on Wednesday afternoons for one hour and catered for children in school years 3, 4 and 5. The children used the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) transitional resource equipment which focused on developing basic racquet and ball skills and improving hand-eye co-ordination, balance and movement skills.

Throughout the term, children covered simple techniques for all the shots, tactics and scoring and the coach adopted a ‘game-based’ approach to all coaching drills and exercises to ensure children were active at all times whilst on the court.

The tennis programme has now been successfully implemented into additional motive8 schools, with a minimum of 2 after-school clubs running in each school.

“motive8 runs our sports programmes and after-schools clubs and we have always been impressed by the professionalism of their staff, high standards of delivery and the fantastic learning environment that they create for all our children. I’ve no doubt the after-school tennis club will become very popular and we are looking into installing a MUGA surface into the playground area to accommodate tennis and other activities into the curriculum all year round. There are so many educational and social benefits for children who include sport and activity as part of their everyday lifestyle and it is such an important part of a child’s development.”

David Butterfield, Head Teacher at Collis School

“This was a fantastic opportunity to introduce more children to tennis at Collis School.”
