With ten successful gymnastics clubs already running, four of which have waiting lists, and some real talent shining through, we decided it was time to develop a gymnastics squad. The concept being, a club outside of school hours that we could invite talented children along to trial for a place.
After some initial difficulty in finding a venue with suitable equipment, we came across Richmond Upon Thames College, which has also become our venue of choice for our children’s parties service too.
motive8 Head Coach, Emma Rudelhoff, oversees the squad, working alongside our Level 2 Trampolining Coach, Aylia Hamilton Bannis, our Level 2 Acrobatic Gymnastics Coach, Doug Hyde and Level 1 Acrobatic Gymnastics Coach, Lauren Kemp, the latter 2 being members of Britain’s Got Talent winners, Spellbound.
Our coaches decided which 16 children out of our four clubs would be invited to attend a five week trial for the squad to determine their suitability. Children were tested on all equipment (floor, bench, vault, trampoline and trampette) and after the 5 week trial all children were invited to stay on at the squad as full time members.
Each session contains a pulse racer, group strengthening and a stretch off, including 3-way splits and bridges. The class is then split into groups. Each week, the groups rotate round two different pieces of apparatus, unless its trampoline, in which case they spend the entire session on it. We finish with a short cool down.
The next progression is for the squad to expand which means trialling more children. Our coaches are currently on the lookout for children to select. We are also considering entering low level competitions and maybe developing a mini display team that can perform at events.
"Having a gym squad gives gymnasts something to aspire to and, if successful in being selected, a great feeling of achievement. Being part of a squad has given Lucy a real feeling of belonging and commitment to the weekly training sessions where she is supported by the coaches to try new skills. She wants to make a personal impact to the team and to do her very best for herself, her coaches and the other members of the squad."
